For those wearing soft headwear - berets, FS or KD caps; the correct cap badge is this one:
Lots of originals and restrikes to be bought for around a fiver on ebay
Photographs of Herts. Regt. soldiers in Italy generally show them without any insignia either on BD or KD, but for those who feel the urge to bling it up, this is the correct arrangement:
Indicating that The Hertfordshires are the senior Infantry Regiment in the 66th Infantry Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division. You can buy the patches from Monty's Locker, DivPatch and Epic. The 66th Inf. Brig. patch needs to be home made.
Note: this is only worn on wool BD. Denim BD has no unit insignia. KD Bush Jackets only had the 1st Inf. Div. triangle poppered on.
What is the situation with the split between Royal Engineers and Hertfordshire Regiment? Should we all simply badge as the latter. I've got both cap badges so it's no real problem there.
Haven't quite decided on exactly how I'm going to mix'n'match the kit for that true med feel (may depend on the weather - ever the optimist!), but was thinking probably denim blouse which would remove the need for unit insignia anyway.
Cheers

I have a small skewer hidden in the collar of my jumping jacket, and a razorblade in my gaiter, as well as my knife.
The RE will be attached to the Herts. platoon. They will deploy with the infantry sections but their primary role will be to deal with the mines that we encounter - although you can also volunteer for sapper training if you're badged up as Herts. and still want to fiddle about with things that go bang.
TBH I have no idea what the correct RE patch configuration would be for this scenario
Hmm
From what I can work out at the time of the Gothic Line 1st Infantry Decision was under V Corps who were under Eighth Army.
So presumably V Corps/8th Army badges wouldn’t be totally out of place for RE.
According to this document:
http://britishmilitaryhistory.co.uk/aqa ... 20(1944-45).pdf
Divisional Engineers were:
23rdField Company, Royal Engineers
238 th(County of Renfrewshire) Field Company, Royal Engineers
248 th(East Anglia) Field Company, Royal Engineers
6 thField Park Company, Royal Engineers
1 st Bridging Platoon, Royal Engineers
So I think some or all of:
Royal Engineers Shoulder Title
1st Infantry Division patch
Royal Engineers AoS
would be fine. Does that seem right? Have I become too anal? Does it matter? Perhaps I will wear the denim after all.

Just got an original Herts cap badge off ebay for £4.99. being posted Monday so hopefully should get it by Friday morning.
Slipon shoulder insignia is easily made , a 2 inch square of black felt with a 1 1/4 (each side) white felt triangle in the middle, either glued or sown on,even simpler if you make the black square a loop to slide over your epaullette.

Hehe, it's as if you read my mind! Due to the idea of a more 'heated' climate, I'll be wearing BD trousers (rolled up to the shins! I've been browsing period photos... ) and a wool OR shirt, so slip-on epaullette insignia was my direction too

Here's my brass titled RE Slips with Div' patch.
Black and white felt insignia on green denim cloth slips made with period colour non-colour-matching thread.
If any of the other Engineers wants a set for FREE! (minus the brass, you'll have to supply that or wear them without) then I've got a set on offer. If we all want to match, I could easily knock up a couple more sets.

Excellent stuff - if there's a set going then I'd love one.

That looks really nice, Rob.
You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier
Well if you have another set spare that would be great, but don't go to any extremes on my account. Also if any other Sapper is desperate for one of your creations then let them have it over me.

Sure thing, they're yours then.

No problems, I'll try to knock up two more pairs worth tonight.
I'll also see if I can add black cloth "RE" titles to them, to try to replicate the black embroidered title slips rather than reley on people having brass titles or going without.
That looks really nice, Rob.
Cheers!
