Chaps,
Just a quick word on kit standards for St. Lo. As you know, it's an open invite, but we'd like to get the kit right for the scenario. If you are unsure, use the kit guide drop down menu. A few additional pointers:
Fallschirmjager - pretty standard really - Feldgrau wool jump trousers, green, splinter or tan & water jump smocks all acceptable.
Waffen SS - Feldgrau wool or HBT uniform is fine or Dot 44s. I'd suggest covering all cuff titles unless you've got one for the 17th*! Easiest way to do that is obviously wearing a camo smock - any SS camo acceptable.
Any questions, feel free to ask.
* www.regaliaspecialist.com have them - "Götz von Berlichingen" !
You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier
Just wondering, as its potentially (hopefully) going to be quite warm by the end of June, are Luftwaffe tropical trousers going to be acceptable attire for the 13th FJ?
“I wanted to come to the Volga at a specific location at a specific city. By chance it carries the name of Stalin himself. So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."
Adolf Hitler, November 1942
"Comrades, Red Army men, commanders and political workers, men and women guerrillas! It is on your perseverance, staunchness, fighting skill and readiness to discharge your duty to the country that the defeat of the German-fascist army and the liberation of the Soviet land from the Hitlerite invaders depend! We can and must clear the Soviet land of Hitlerite vermin."

Would they have been used in Normandy in 1944? If not, then no.

Hmmm, a good question! its certainly theoretically possible as the tropical kit was available since 1940 and FJ's who fought in afrika and crete were transfered to normandy, so it is possible. however, I havn't seen any photographic or anecdotal evidence that the were actually worn!
Probably be best to stick to the feldgrau wools which is fine!

Yes, please.
Even with photographic evidence, if it wasn't common practice we'd prefer them not to be worn. It'd ruin the "unit" look a bit.
If it's warm, I shall dispense with the Fliegerbluse - quite commonly seen in photos.

I shall definitely dispense with the fliegerbluse... mainly because I dont actually own one! and secondly, as I plan to spend the day lugging a 10kg support weapon around, I'm going to be hot whatever the weather!
If its gets too hot, I'll just ditch my trews altogether like these guys:

an some have questioned the wearing of kilts.................
At least a gust of wind isn't going to ruin their modesty Nige
I've seen Heer wearing some tropical gear in Normandy but I believe they were transfers from the south of France. I've not seen any FJ in tropicals though. Anyway the FJR13 was formed in Northern France so wouldn't have been issued any tropical gear.

I didn't know you had an MG, a custom build I take it?

Indeed, still a work in progress but should definitly be ready for St Lo.

Great stuff. This means we can have some proper German squad tactics
Time to brush up on the hand signals chaps...

Great idea Martin, it would be excellent if all us FJ's could play as a proper Zug. Do you know of any good references to correct said hand signals?
The next question is, who wants to be 2nd gunner?!

Cool. Nice to know we have at least one MG coming as well. I don't mind being your No 2 if you like. I fell I need to find a 7.92 ammo belt to look the part though.
It would be good to try and use some proper tactics too, especially since the Doughboys will no doubt be using some following their training day this weekend.
That article is interesting, especially the last one. Russian rifles and a revolver that burnt his hand, definitely not an elite unit that one.
There is a thread on the forum called German Hand Signals / Torch Colours but I'm not clever enough to know how to embed it here.
I have a Reiberts which goes into squad tactics it but it's heavy reading and not especially enlightening.
Here is some stuff culled from another website:
Infantry sections consisted of a leader und 12-14 men, who normally advanced into combat in two separate squads, using different routes of advance:
* Gruppenführer - Section Leader
* l.M.G.-Trupp - LMG Squad (4 gunners with 1 LMG)
* Truppführer - Squad Leader
* Schützentrupp - Rifle Squad (7-9 riflemen)
If an enemy position had been identified, the section leader would direct the fire of the LMG squad while the squad leader maneuvered the rifle squad into an assault position close to the enemy, but in cover. If the enemy position was to be assaulted, the section leader went forward and took command of the rifle squad, either keeping the squad leader by his side or sending him back to command the LMG squad.
A single man - the Anschlussmann had the lead in a squad, everyone else guided their movement on the Anschlussmann. Anschluss was an important concept in attack and defence, it prevented gaps in the line by mandating physical/visual contact between the lead unit and the units on its immediate flank.
Constant chiseling at the enemy line would eventually lead to a significant Einbruch - Penetration. Exploitation of the breakthrough would allow reserves to roll up the front and initiate a strategic encirclement.
Maybe we need to start a separate thread on this where we can go through what weapons the FJ unit has and who wants to do what...
